Chapter 15
May 5th, 2019
"Amy. Amy, wake up."
I open my eyes to see a frantic Rochelle standing over me. She's dressed for her next shift at the airline.
"What's going on?" I ask as she grabs my phone. It feels so early.
She starts scrolling for something. I wonder what she's looking for? The expression on her face tells me that it has something to do with yesterday's events. I scrunch up my blanket, pulling it close to my chest. We haven't spoken since we came home, probably because I was already sleeping when she arrived late last night. I hope she doesn't hate me for abandoning her.
I try to make things right. "Rochelleâ"
She interrupts me, shoving my phone back in my face, "Look."
She shows me a live video of Taylor publicly apologizing. Ok that's good but wait. They cut him off. Now there's another clip playing. It looks old. Oh no. I gasp and cover my mouth. No, no, no. I rip the blanket off of me and stand up.
I tug on my hair. "No, this can't be happening."
I'm on the verge of tears as the clip shows a seventeen-year-old me, running off my high school stage, leaving Taylor Kingston publicly devastated. How did they find this? I question. I vaguely remember my mother saying back then, that Taylorâs producers decided not to air the failed proposal. So how is this possible?
I put my phone down. Oh gosh. I sit down on the bed, feeling just as horrible as yesterday. I look up at the ceiling. Could things get any worse? I ask myself. Rochelle touches my arm and expresses her care.
"Girl, I had no idea you guys went back that far."
I shrug, now looking down at my bare feet. "It doesn't matter."
"Listen, I gotta go, but tomorrow we should do a girls night so you can fill me in. Ok?" she says, rushing out the bedroom door.
I throw on a robe and follow her to the living room. "Hey wait, I just wanna say... Iâm sorry."
"Sorry for what?" she smiles while grabbing her purse.
"For completely ditching you and... Blake." I say his name in a low whisper.
"Girl, I saw what happened on Snap It. You donât need to be sorry." She flips her hair. "And besides, I met someone." She flashes me a smile then opens the door.
We are both startled to see Blake standing there in the doorway. Rochelle quickly lets him in and mouths to me, "Good luck." Then she leaves.
I gulp, smiling at him. He doesn't reciprocate it. I pull him in for a hug but as I do, his arms stay glued to his sides. There is no warmth between us. And the expression on his face worries me. I can see the pain in his eyes and knowing that I'm the cause of it, hurts me too.
After I let go of him, Blake goes right to the couch. He waits for me to join him. This is my chance, I think. I've gotta tell him everything. That includes telling him about Jack, I conclude.
